Major discovery! A hundred million-ton oil field!

2021 10/05

On September 30, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced that my country`s Bohai Sea has made another large-scale oil and gas discovery-Kenli 10-2 oil field, which has been approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and has proven crude oil reserves of more than 100 million. Ton, further consolidating the foundation of my country`s offshore oil and gas resource reserves, which is of great significance to the stable production and production of offshore oil and gas fields and the protection of national energy security.

Kenli 10-2 oil field is located in the southern waters of the Bohai Sea, about 245 kilometers away from Tianjin, with an average water depth of about 15.7 meters. The discovery well Kenli 10-2-4 encountered an oil layer in total of 27 meters, and the drilling depth was 1,520 meters. After testing, the oil field can produce 81.55 tons of crude oil per day from a single well.

Xu Changgui, General Manager of Exploration Department of CNOOC, said that the successful discovery of Kenli 10-2 oilfield broke the situation that the shallow layer of Bohai Oilfield sag has never been discovered in 100 million-ton lithologic oil fields, demonstrating the exploration of Bohai lithologic reservoirs. The broad prospects have important guiding significance for the exploration of similar basins.

Following the discovery of the Kenli 600--100 million-ton oil field in early 2020, CNOOC explorers learned from successful experience and quickly carried out an evaluation of the Kenli 10-2 structure on the south side of the Kenli 6-1 oil field.

Kenli 10-2 structure is located in the Laizhou Bay depression area in Bohai Sea. After more than 40 years of exploration in this area, the exploration of structural reservoirs has become more and more difficult, and the scale of the discovered reservoirs has become smaller and smaller, with no commercial value. At the same time, according to traditional understanding, the shallow and deep strata in the Laizhou Bay depression area are all mud-rich deposits, and the oil and gas in the deep underground are blocked by strata of different lithologies. Stratum migration and accumulation, for many years, the exploration of lithologic oil and gas reservoirs in this area has not achieved breakthroughs.

In the face of many unfavorable factors, based on solid basic research, explorers boldly innovated exploration ideas and proposed a new model of Neogene lithologic reservoir formation. Under the guidance of new ideas, prospectors gradually figured out the enrichment law and exploration direction of oil and gas reservoirs. After a year of evaluation, a large-scale lithologic oil and gas reservoir, Kenli 10-2 oil field, was successfully discovered in the shallow layer of the Laizhou Bay Depression.

According to Xu Changgui, there are many producing oil fields such as Kenli 10-1 and Kenli 10-4 in the vicinity of Kenli 10-2 oilfield. The development facilities are relatively complete. It is expected that full production will be seen in 2025, which will help Bohai Oilfield to increase production of 40 million tons.
